Japan, Nagoya. March/03/2007. ..Astro Boy ~ Child of Science...?Atom,? an embodiment of the self-propelled robot, was created by cartoonist Osamu Tezuka. The character first appeared in 1951 in the Ambassador Atom saga serialized in the Shonen cartoon magazine published by Kobunsha. The following year saw the launch of the Mighty Atom series with Atom as the star. In 1963 this series became Japan?s first serial TV animation, and was a bit hit with average ratings of over 30 percent. The literally countless number of products marketed to promote the show testifies to its runaway popularity. The cartoon feature also gained a major following overseas as Astro Boy, with the animated version undergoing several remakes over the years since.
