Turkmenistan, Ancient Merv. October/2007...An autumn equinox sun rises over Sultan Sanjar's Mausoleum at Ancient Merv. Built in the 12th-century A.D, the mausoleum commemorates Sanjar's reign in the Seljuk Dynasty (1040-1221 A.D.) Part of a 11km2 UNESCO World Heritage Site, the mausoleum -- described as having a turquoise roof visible a days journey from the city -- is one of only a few standing structures that remain from a site crucial to Central Asian development. From the Achaemenian empire in 559 B.C. to the arrival of Islam in 7th Century A.D., the mongol armies of Genghis Khan in 1221 A.D., to the birth of Turkmenistan in 1991 -- Merv has stood witness to it all.
